The Cheyenne by Frederic Remington on display at the Denver Art Museum has been said, by Lew Sharp — a recent Director of the Museum and former Curator of American Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as 'the finest sculpture produced by any American at any time.' This sculpture is No. 3 of the edition and shows Remington, a Yale graduate, "in full swing in his nostalgia of the West," according to Maytham. "A donor offered to buy something for the museum, preferably of the American West, if I could find something he would buy it," Maytham continued. "I called a friend, an expert on Remington bronzes, who had also published the best catalogue of that work, to ask if he could suggest something. He identified this object and we pursued it. The Cheyenne was acquired by the museum in 1981.
